How many times have you asked "how can I lower my score the quickest way possible?". As golfers, we've all asked this question. The answer isn't always very easy. "You need to practice, practice, practice." "You need professional instruction." While these are both good ways to lower your score, who has the time, or money, for all that? So how do you quickly lower your score? Get Putting instruction!
The importance of putting cannot be stressed enough. Getting good putting instruction really is the quickest way to lower your score. If you look at some statistics you get a clearer idea of why I think this is the case. Putts account for anywhere from 40-60% of your total stroke count on an average round. I'm guessing you don't spend 40-60% of your practice time on putting, do you? O.K. do you spent at least 20% of your time on putting? No? Its not your fault. We all love to hit ball after ball at the range and see them go 250 yards. Its fun. The thing is, while driving the ball is very important, how many drives do you actually hit on the golf course? Probably not more than 14.
All I'm trying to say here is try to get some putting instruction in with all the other stuff. Spend an equal amount of time practicing your putting, and you will see results right away. It will lower your score.
So what do you work on exactly when you are practicing your putting? You want to get a pre-putt routine to help with your state of mind. You should learn how to read the green effectively. You should perfect your fundamentals. All of this can be easily perfected with a small amount of practice. The importance of getting some putting instruction is underrated as well. If you are thinking of getting any type of instruction, whether it be online, in ebook form, or otherwise, go with putting instruction. It is the quickest way to lower your score!
So do yourself a favor and stop ignoring the one club that you pull out of the bag the most! You won't regret it!
